Daumenreise workshop with Maya Yonesho.

Daumenreise workshop.

In December 2023 I had the incredible chance - alongside some of my colleagues from CSC (Centro Sperimentale di Cinematografia Piemonte) and some former students from Gobelin and MOME - to participate to one of Maya Yonesho's workshops, this time themed around the city of Turin. Even though I was familiar with Maya's work, I didn't know what her technique ("daumenreise", meaning "thumb travel") would entail. It was certainly challenging, and I had to fight some lack of sleep, but I think that the final result was absolutely worthwhile. Aside from the work itself, meeting this amazing animator and being able to peek into her creative process was life changing for me, and working side to side with former students from the best European animation schools was enriching and eye-opening.

My contribution to the short.

At first, us students from CSC gave a tour to the European animators around Turin so we could spot the iconic places and monuments. We then did some thumbnails and put them on the classroom wall to choose between them and we then put the storyboard together. Each student had to complete two or three sequences, starting from our own drawing and going into someone else's. Between the thumbnails I made, the ones that were chosen were the Porta Nuova railway station facade and a statue from the Egyptian Museum.
